Joe Weber has decided to sell his AM station, which is now NewsTalk 1160 WCFO, to American Catholic Radio, a non-profit religious group.
The transaction dollar amount is not known, but it will have to be revealed soon to the Federal Communications Commission. Unfortunately, AM stations have lost significant value in recent years as listeners have dropped off and advertising has gone elsewhere.
About 15 part-time and full-time employees will lose their jobs, including long-time program director Jeff Davis, who has been running the station since 2004. He gave employees two weeks notice today.
“It’s just time,” Davis said. “It’s gotten harder and harder with all the other platforms available for radio listeners with the Internet and podcasts, Pandora and Spotify and Sirius XM.
WCFO has aired Don Imus in the mornings but Imus just retired last week. Others on the schedule include Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage and John Walsh.
Weber remains owner of the quirky music station 1690 WMLB-AM, “The Voice of the Arts.”
